Age is no pardon – to me, fall will forever be marked by the thrill of the back to school shopping spree.  Be sure to check back with me next year when I’m scraping together rent money and eating nothing but ramen … but at least in spirit, the partner to autumn’s constantly evolving foliage is the perfectly evolved school wardrobe.  It’s funny, because spring is usually thought of as the “renewal and rejuvenation” season.  We ain’t no flowers, kids.  Nothing says renewal like a backpack that smells like fresh nylon.

I don’t like to be pinned down to one specific style identity, so I usually pick up pieces from all over the fashion spectrum.  I’d wear both of the looks above in a heartbeat.  On the left, prep reigns, where a royal blue blazer finds its royal match in cheery blush-toned oxfords.  To the right is the ultimate in sporty chic – athletic basics like the tennis shoe and the track short get a wildly upscale spin thanks to Rebecca Taylor.  Note that both looks are topped off by a grown-up backpack – hey, I’ve still got books to carry even if I’m not in the market for a Jansport.

Which look is your favorite?  Do you still consider fall to be the season of back to school shopping?

  1. Fall always feels like back to school, even though I’ve been out of school for 2 years. I actually kind of miss the big back to school shopping event…I remember being SO excited to hit the mall with my mom and sister to build a new wardrobe for the year. I can’t go on spending sprees anymore (just because my mom won’t go for that anymore…I have to fund my own shopping problem now), but fall always gives me that feeling anyway! I LOVE those wedge sneakers…they need to come down about $120 in price and find a home in my closet. :)

  2. I completely agree. Fall shopping will forever be back to school shopping (back to work shopping doesn’t seem to have the same ring to it!). I’m completely looking forward to snagging cozy sweaters and clothes in interesting fabrics…even though I have an even tighter budge this year (sigh…). I love EVERYTHING about look two–can it magically show up in my closet now?

  3. I absolutely love both! I haven’t been seeing a lot of the more “cheery” palettes for fall recently, but there’s nothing better than a good blue and yellow preppy combo to reel me in. I’m definitely more of a color girl, myself, but if I could pull of look #2 I would throw it on in a heartbeat.
